Still Giving Life

This week holds many thoughts as I reflect, contemplate, and dwell on the actions of this week of Jesus' life.

After three years of interacting with people, of telling them the ways of His kingdom and who He is and where He comes from; He experiences - the hosannas and waving of palm branches, still missing the purpose of His coming and kingdom.  He hears the words spoken, "I never knew the Man."  He wrestles in the garden with the weight of His purpose.  He was greeted with a kiss from a friend that was betraying loyalty.  He felt the whip of the lashes coming down upon His back.  He heard the mocking cries of His Kingship, of who He is.  The crown of thorns pierces His head, thorns that were part of the curse of our sin, He now wears and is pierced with on the tender place of His head.

Jesus, the One who is the Way to Life.  Jesus, the One who is Truth and told us the truths of His way, is now being ridiculed, whipped, and pierced.

Rejection.

Rejection pierces deep.  Jesus, the Man on the middle cross, hangs there bearing the weight of being mocked and rejected for showing the Way back to Himself.  He dies, being the Way for us.

What is gripping my heart is in the midst of all this, He speaks life and heals for the very ones rejecting Him.  When Peter cut the high priest's servant's ear, Jesus rebuked Peter and reached out and touched the spot where the ear was no longer there and healed it.  Jesus, as the High Priest, touched and healed the one who was a servant to the high priest and coming to arrest Him.

Healing to the one who came to hurt Him.

Jesus, with pain and compassion, greeted Judas, the one who betrayed Him with an endearment - a kiss to the soldiers coming for Him.

No retaliation - still offering life.

Jesus, on the cross, spoke of forgiveness.  "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do".  Jesus gave His life all the while continuing to give life to those around Him.

As I let this settle into my heart, I am left with the stark reality of my own responses when I am hurt, rejected when I offer myself, and when I experience heartaches.  I am too much like Peter - defending, whirling my defense mechanism.  I sense the tenderness of Jesus saying, "No, stay with Me.  I love you.  I offer life and healing."

I bow my head, confessing, and cry out to Jesus, "Help me.  It's only through You and because of You that I can live out the ways You taught us."  I pause and realize, that if Jesus who is the Way to truth and life does not defend or demand allegiance and to be understood, why should I, a human, demand that I be understood?

When we stay with the Way, we find our way.  We find our way to truth and life.  God's word is truth and is a sword.  We take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God and 'fight'.  Ephesians 6:17

As I write, today is Good Friday, the day Jesus stretched out His arms, open and wide and gave His life so you and I can have life eternal.  Inviting, open.

The two men who also hung with Jesus offered ridicule, but one repents, choosing Jesus and receives life eternal.

The invitation is still being offered - the invitation to receive the gift of life that Jesus offered and continues to offer.  But we must want it.  We must accept the invitation.  We must let go and see God in the midst of our broken stories.

That life is not only for us personally but as Jesus lived it, He modeled for us the way.  And yes, giving life, even in the midst of pain, betrayal, and mockery.

Our pain does not need to end with itself.  With Jesus, there is hope and life.

Jesus accepted the weight of His cup as He surrendered to His Father.  As we surrender to Jesus and know of His love, we too, can find the strength to walk the path before us.  We can, because Jesus promises us that He not only gives us life but He is with us in this life.

The weight of the cup and the path Jesus walked became the way to the resurrection and life over death.  The weight of pain and death we experience can also become the way to life and resurrection when we choose Jesus and stay with Him.

The Origin of Life

Life.  To be alive, breathing, spirit, you, living is to have life.

Genesis 2:7 says, Then the Lord God formed man of the dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 1:20 tells us that God created living creatures to swarm in the waters.
Genesis 1:30 says, and to everything that moves on the each which has life, I have given.

Life began at the word of God.  Life started at the mere spoken words that echo through time in the living of the creatures that God created.

But for man, life began when God stooped over and breathed into man His own breath of life and man's chest heaved with the first intake of God's breath.

When Satan slithered into the garden, lying on a branch of a tree and hissed the words to Eve to look at the fruit; He was after God.  Satan knew if he could get Eve to doubt God's goodness and take from the one tree that God said, "No", that the knowledge of evil would kill and destroy life in its purest form, God's breath.  The end result would be in expired breath, death.

But God didn't let us in this state without a way, a way back to life.  That very day He promised a Saviour, a Redeemer, One who would come and save the world; to give life by giving His life.

Although death has entered our world and we now know pain, suffering, and death; God wants to continue to breathe life into our souls.  Among this brokenness we can choose life and Jesus came to give us life and to give it abundantly. John 10:10

Life continues to be found in Jesus.  Life is found as we sit at His feet and inhale His grace, exhaling our expectations.  It's found as we inhale His forgiveness and release, exhaling our mistakes and choosing repentance.  It's found in the letting go and choosing to rest in His provision, His being enough.

Literally, life is found between the exhale and the inhale.  And deep breaths actually calm us down and can help us to regulate when anxiety and fears loom large.
Spiritually and emotionally, life is also found between the exhale and the inhale; the letting go and the receiving.

So today, in whatever state or position you find yourself in; stop, take a deep breath and let it go; receiving the breath of God in exchange.

Choosing God is choosing life.
Living in God's truth is living life abundantly.

Choosing to give thanks is to remember who God is and to add Him into your situation.  Choosing to believe His words of truth leads us to the doorway and on to the path of freedom.

Choosing to live out the truth of God and to believe Him is to find life and to find it to be enough and more than enough.  (Just so you know, it doesn't lessen the validity of what you're walking through it only puts it in its place and allows you to live the miracle of God's upside, miraculous way.)

Choosing God is to choose life.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Deep breaths

When We See the, But God, In Our Story

But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place?  And as for you, you meant evil against me, BUT GOD meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.  So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your littles ones."  So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.  Genesis 50:19-21

He said similar words years before when he revealed himself to his brothers... "Don't be angry or grieved with yourselves... FOR GOD sent me before you to preserve life." Genesis 45:5

Joseph saw God in his story and it made all the difference in his life and story.

Those words spoken about you aren't truthful, but God...
I have cancer, but God...
Those people rejected me, but God...
Someone else received the applause or promotion, but God...

Put in the hard you are walking through, but choose to look beyond to see God in the story.  Look beyond to the possibilities of what God may do.  That may be too difficult right now as the muck of the hard is too much; that's ok, simply choose to stay with God, trusting Him that He is in your story.

As I think of all that Joseph walked through, the hatred, the selling to a strange people and ending up in Egypt, resisting temptation then ending in prison because of words spoken that were not truthful, being forgotten by a fellow inmate and at the end of it all; he could say the words... "you meant it for evil, but God... meant it for life."

He saw God in his story and it kept him from bitterness and retaliation.  When I loose sight of God in my story, at how big He really is; I get stuck, mired in the pain and all too quickly I walk in the muck of self-pity and revengeful thoughts.

For a bit the waves of the storm threatened to take over, I lost sight of how big my God is and discouragement set in.

Look at your problem and God becomes smaller. Look at God and your storm diminishes.

And I'm reminded of Peter, the moment he walked on the stormy waters to Jesus was also the moment he sank when he looked at the stormy waters. But he cried out to Jesus and Jesus stretched out His arm to save him.

The way of God is the way to life.  God is still in the life-preserving business.

With God there is no room for retaliation because there is always a bigger picture happening.  The hard part for me is to trust God, I mean really trusting Him and looking beyond to the possibilities of, but God.
